Art Gallery of South Australia Announces New Director
ADELAIDE.- Chairman of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Michael Abbott QC today announced the appointment of Nick Mitzevich as the new Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Mr. Mitzevich is currently the Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane and was formerly Director of the Newcastle Region Art Gallery. His more than 15 years experience managing and directing public art museums has been characterised by innovation and bold strategic vision, with impressive success in increasing visitor numbers, developing programs and collections and building philanthropic and corporate support.
Michael Abbott said, “I am very pleased that Nick has accepted the position. Over the past nine years, he has led two quite different art museums through a period of restructure, renewal and redevelopment and his record of achievement has been outstanding. We believe he has the drive, initiative and vision that the Art Gallery of South Australia needs for its future.”
At forty years old, Mr. Mitzevich is the youngest person to assume the role of Director in the Art Gallery of South Australia’s 129 year history.
Nick Mitzevich said, “It is an honour to have been selected as the new Director. The Art Gallery of South Australia has a dynamic history which is most inspiring and I look forward to enhancing the extraordinary collection and continuing to enlighten, surprise and stimulate visitors with accessible and thoughtful programs.”
Premier of South Australia and Minister for the Arts, the Hon. Mike Rann welcomed the appointment saying, “Nick Mitzevich brings an enviable combination of youth, energy and experience to this important role. South Australians can look forward to a revitalised Art Gallery under his leadership.”
Mr. Mitzevich is expected to take up his new position in late July.
