PARIS.- After seven years directing the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière, Chiara Parisi will resign her commission.

During those years, Chiara Parisi worked on the development and commitment of this exceptional location: a free and eclectic tool for creation in the heart of France, on the Millevaches plateau.

For seven years, from 2004 to 2011, 69 artists came on the island of Vassivière at her invitation to conceive and produce 22 exhibitions, mainly monographic, inside Aldo Rossi’s building but also in the neighbouring forest, lake and meadows…

Her program included many new projects such as those of Claude Lévêque, Huang Yong Ping, Cyprien Gaillard, Oscar Tuazon, Rosa Barba, Thomas Houseago and also Hubert Duprat, Marisa Merz, Tino Sehgal…

Many of these artists made their first solo show in France in this Framework.

Putting the Art centre at the heart of an international dynamic, Chiara Parisi developed a network with institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo, the Modern Art Oxford, Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery, Mönchengladbach’s Museum Abteiberg, Trento’s Fondazione Galleria Civica-Centro di Ricerca sulla Contemporaneità and also the Mart in Trento/Rovereto and she curated projects for the Venice, Athens and Istanbul biennials.

Locally, collaboration were made possible with 5,25, Limousin’s contemporary art network as well as nationally with d.c.a. the association for the development of art centres, and also with Metz’s Nuits Blanches or the artists residencies at Les Arques.

Reflecting on a truly original way to comprehend art inside the landscape, Chiara Parisi modified the location into a sculptures wood which was progressively enriched with many creations like those of Yona Friedman, Victor Man, Kris Martin, Michael Sailstorfer, Serge Spitzer, Alexander Ponomarev, and very recently Koo Jeong-A’s skate park.

In order to ease the encounter between the artist and the audience, Chiara Parisi also devises a lecture cycle allowing the attendees to virtually visit the studios of forty nine artists.

On the Island of Vassivère, where she lived, Chiara Parisi, toiled to make the presence of artists indispensable and she planned an artists residency with the architects Berger & Berger, BuildingBuilding.

Chiara Parisi will now leave the direction of the Art centre to become the new Director of the cultural programs at the Monnaie de Paris.

Contemporary art historian, laureate of a research doctorate from La Sapienza University in Rome, Chiara Parisi teached there for several years while conducting art projects that will create her first ties with France. From 2000, she is the curator of various exhibitions at Villa Medici, particularly through the cycle La Folie de la Villa Médicis, and she facilitates the making of many projects from artists that are now internationally acclaimed.

Art critic, Chiara Parisi collaborates with specialised magazines and is also a member of the buying comitee of FRAC Franche-Comté and member of Rome Maxxi’s Italia Arte Contemporanea Prize.
