Picasso Artworks at New Delhi by Fundación Mapfre
NEW DELHI.- Today, Fundación Mapfre and the Cervantes Institute have opened the exhibition ‘Vollard Suite’ by Pablo Picasso. It will be on show in the exhibitions halls at the aforementioned centre until January 24, 2010.
The exhibition includes 100 prints created by Picasso between 13th September 1930 and March 1937, commissioned by the art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard.
This set of engravings appeared in 1939 in two formats: one large (760 mm x 500 mm) on vellum paper signed by the artist in red or black pencil, with 50 copies per plate, and another smaller version (445 mm x 340 mm) on Montval laid paper with the “Vollard” or “Picasso” water mark in print runs of 250 copies.

The awkward story of the origin of this work, its varied themes and its technical diversity in which most varied creative styles were used (chiselling, etching, aquatint, wash drawing and dry point, and even combinations of these styles), has led to its dispersion and to the fact that at present there are very few complete collections.
The “Vollard Suite” hence implies one of the most important historic and artistic testimonies from the first half of the 20th-century.
The opening ceremony was attended by Carmen Caffarel, President of the Cervantes Institute; Pablo Jiménez Burillo, General Manager of Fundación Mapfre’s Cultural Institute and curator of the exhibition; Rufino Sánchez Cultural Manager of the Cervantes Institute; and Óscar Pujol, Manager of the Cervantes Institute in New Delhi.
