The art of printmaking shown at Mumbai
Bombay, India.- The iconic prints of Lakshmi and Saraswati by veteran artist Raja Ravi Varma can be found in several households, thanks to the art of printmaking. Whether it wasa struggle for freedom or a medium to send out important religious or political messages, printmaking has always helped.
A national level printmaking exhibition is taking place in the city which will include manyrenowned artists. Art curator Priyasri Patodia who is curating the exhibition says, “We have displayed 300 art works (prints) of about 90 artists.”
She explains, “We hope to draw out the nuances of printmaking while exposing the public eye and the art viewing cognoscenti to different methods and approaches of the subject. This is the disparate genre which produced techniques for printmaking such as intaglio, aquatints, lithography, etching and others.”
One of the participating artists, Naina Dalal, says, “The main image in my work is portrayal of the woman and the world around her. I am talking about women of the Earth, perpetually struggling, complaining, yet bearing the brunt, living with hope for the next sunrise. The printmaking medium is most suitable to express my feelings for women.”
The printmaking show is taking place at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda, till July 11.
