The Transcendent Landscapes of Northwest Artist Victoria Adams at the Tacoma Art Museum

TACOMA, WA.- Somewhere between the soothing and the sublime, the work of landscape artist Victoria Adams offers a respite from our busy lives. Tacoma Art Museum is proud to present Where Sky Meets Earth: The Luminous Landscapes of Victoria Adams. A local artist living on Vashon Island, Adams paints rich, panoramic views of sky and land, untouched and untrammeled by man.

The exhibition features a compelling survey of Adams’ paintings, with works ranging from 1992 to present. The artist created several new works specifically for this exhibition, which is the museum’s 2010 Northwest Perspective Series, the annual scholarly examination of a regional artist.

“Adams’ art provokes an interrelated set of responses to the landscape that are deeply conditioned by art historical traditions, cultural myths, and historical experience,” notes curator Rock Hushka. “She paints the symbols of a beautiful and beneficent natural world, creating a place where the mind is free to wander without fear or intrusion.”

Victoria Adams’ work follows the long tradition of landscape artists, from the European masters, to American Luminist and Hudson River artists. She draws inspiration from fragments of actual photographed scenes to memories and daydreams, all filtered through the influence of the historical landscape tradition. Her work reaffirms the remaining aspects of pristine nature while it also mourns the countryside that we have lost. Adams notes that “with the destruction of the natural landscape, landscape painting can provide a venue for exercising our innate need to connect with nature.”

“Her work speaks directly to the museum’s mission of emphasizing the art and artists of the Northwest,” notes Stephanie A. Stebich, Director of Tacoma Art Museum. “Victoria Adams touches on several Northwest ideals: a sense of freedom, desire for solitude, and respect for nature.”

Victoria Adams will visit Tacoma Art Museum throughout the summer with lectures, workshops, book signings and more.
