Exhibition of New Works by Artist Paul Rusconi at Stellan Holm Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- Stellan Holm Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by artist Paul Rusconi, entitled American Boarders. The exhibition will open on Wednesday, April 7 and will run through Saturday, May 1, 2010. This will be Paul Rusconi’s first solo exhibition at Stellan Holm Gallery.
For the series, American Boarders, Paul Rusconi depicts eleven of the most influential and talented skateboarders in contemporary American culture. While showcasing these boarders as individuals and icons, the scope of the series celebrates the collective pulse of skate subculture and its assimilation into American popular culture. The portraits are honest, adventurous, and luminary. While nodding to various art historical trends, from medieval portraiture to contemporary street art, Rusconi embraces and traverses our world as it appears right now.
Rusconi’s process involves a new form of digital screen-printing in multiple layers, rendering portraiture through the use of cyan, yellow, magenta and black. Seen up close these colors remain visible in a geometric pattern akin to benday dots; at a distance they blend into a convincing gray scale. A major fixture in Rusconi’s work is the use of enamel nail polish. The translucency and newness of these colors bring something alluring and distinct to his portrayals. The temporal and ever-changing palette mirrors the furor of contemporary fashion, celebrity and mass media that Rusconi’s work ultimately examines.
Born and raised in California, Los Angeles artist Paul Rusconi creates contemporary portraiture culled from America’s pop culture consciousness. His works are represented in various notable private and public collections, including The Batonga Foundation, Washington, DC, The Weisman Museum at Pepperdine, Malibu, CA and 20th Century Fox, Los Angeles, CA.
