Janis Gardner Cecil Joins Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art as Director of Sales
NEW YORK, NY.- Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art LLC announces the appointment of Janis Gardner Cecil as Director of Sales. Ms. Cecil will be responsible for the overall sales and operations of Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art LLC. In addition to her position of Director of Sales, Ms. Cecil will help lead the overall direction of the gallery’s art fair program.
Ms. Cecil joins Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art from Marlborough Gallery, which she joined in 2001, where she held the positions of Sales Director and Director of Publications and Press. Ms. Cecil curated and organized numerous large museum and public exhibitions of gallery artists during her tenure at Marlborough. Among them are the exhibitions “Tom Otterness in Indianapolis”, with Public Art Indianapolis, which featured twenty-five bronze sculptures throughout downtown Indianapolis in 2005; followed by a site-specific installation of new work by Chakaia Booker in 2008. She was one of the team of organizers of the current exhibition of monumental sculpture by Manolo Valdés on Broadway for which she co-authored the audio tour.
Ms. Cecil organized important solo exhibitions of work by Chakaia Booker with the curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in 2008 and the artist’s solo show at the DeCordova Sculpture Park + Museum with Sr. Curator Nick Capasso in 2009. She also edited hundreds of publications for both the Chelsea and 57th Street galleries, including Marlborough’s publications for the Larry Rivers Memorial exhibition in 2005 and the over 200-page catalogue for their acclaimed Picasso print show in the spring of 2010. Ms. Cecil has written broadly on contemporary art, including an essay on the work of Claudio Bravo for the 2007 Venice Biennale.
In 1992, Ms. Cecil was a research associate at Wildenstein and Company where she sold her first important work of art in 1996, making her the youngest person in the gallery’s history to do so. After the establishment of PaceWildenstein, Ms. Cecil worked with both galleries. A native of Arlington, VA, she has a degree in the history of art from Barnard College.
Edward Tyler Nahem says of Ms. Cecil’s appointment, “I am delighted that Janis will be joining the team at Edward Tyler Nahem as Director of Sales. Through her solid work with important clients and museums, she brings almost twenty years of extraordinary expertise. She has shepherded numerous publications and curated first-rate gallery exhibitions. Added to her professional credits, Janis has a cheery disposition and a positive approach to everything. I look forward to working together.”
Ms. Cecil joined the gallery on November 22, 2010, and reports directly to Edward Tyler Nahem.
“It is with a tremendous sense of excitement that I join Edward Tyler Nahem and his team. In addition to his excellent taste in art, Edward has a deep understanding of the market and a long and successful history. Edward Tyler Nahem exhibits the best of the best, and it will be a pleasure to work with him in his beautiful gallery on 57th Street,” says Ms. Cecil. “We invite everyone to visit our booth at Art Basel Miami Beach where we will have an array of excellent post-war and contemporary art on view.”
